Lumley Castle was first converted to a hotel in 1976
Built in 1388, it takes its name from Sir Ralph Lumley, a soldier renowned for his bravery in battles such as the defence of Berwick-on-Tweed in 1388 and the Battle of Otterburn. Sir Ralph was involved in the conspiracy to overthrow Henry IV, a coup that failed and led to Sir Ralph and his son Thomas being arrested, stripped of their titles and executed in 1400.
